the Artisanal Small-scale Mining sector employs about one million people directly and this number positively affects the lives of about 20% of Ghana’s population. Poverty reduction, wealth creation, development of skills and the growth of indigenous entrepreneurs. The sector accounts for 35% of national gold production. The sector has a mix of responsible and irresponsible miners, leading to environmental degradation and pollution. The challenges associated with the ASM sector are environmental degradation, bad safety records, pollution of water bodies, reducing the turbidity of water bodies and stopping mining in forest zones
GHANA NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF SMALL-SCALE MINERS (GNASSM):
Ensures that members engage in sustainable and responsible mining activities;
Ensures that members and associates adopt practices that avoid and minimize the environmental damages due to extraction and processing of ore;
Assist Government and regulators to deal with recalcitrant members whose activities do not abide by the governing principles of the sector;
Empowers and equips taskforce to effectively monitor and enforce sustainable and responsible mining;
Supports key stakeholders such as UMaT to develop appropriate support systems for sustainable and responsible mining.
UMAT https://umat.edu.gh/ Mining Engineering; and Minerals Engineering. 1200 students including from foreign students from Sierra Leone, Cameroun, Burkina Faso, Mali, and China).
UNIVERSITY OF MINES AND TECHNOLOGY (UMaT) for ASM
Assists the governments to strengthen effective monitoring of the sector;
Supports the government to formulate and develop ASM compatible regulations for environmental protection;
Leads research & development of environmentally friendly technologies to make the sector safer and very productive;
Lead in the restoration of the degraded ecosystem (rivers and degraded lands);
Develops proactive strategies together with other stakeholders in dealing with the challenges facing the sector.
Investigation for potential partnership in education & research such as replacing in the gold recovery process the mercury by the cyanides compounds and removing the cyanide in the effluents by biological treatment (Veolia process tested and validated in the Agshanti Gold Mine.
